When machinery is inadvertently turned on while it is being maintained, repaired, or adjusted, workers are at risk of electrocution, crushing injuries, loss of body parts, or death. OSHA's lockout/tagout standard is meant to protect employees from injury when a piece of equipment unexpectedly starts up, cycles, or releases stored energy. This is done by identifying and controlling all potentially hazardous energy sources every time a worker is within range of moving parts of machinery.

Potentially hazardous energy sources include electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, and thermal energy. To de-energize machinery properly, all energy sources must be identified and neutralized before workers perform any cleaning, repairing, servicing, setting up, or adjusting activities.
